Choosing plants for a low light space means understanding what "low light" actually means, and which plants genuinely thrive in it versus just survive. This guide covers everything you need to shop smart and keep your low light plants healthy long-term.
Want to build out your low light collection without the guesswork? Our Low-Light Plant Subscription Box sends a curated shade-tolerant plant to your door every month, all handpicked to thrive in dim conditions. Starting at $24.99.
Low light doesn't mean no light — it means indirect, limited, or filtered light. In practical terms: north-facing windows, rooms with small or few windows, spots more than 6 feet from a light source, and offices with only fluorescent lighting.
Most houseplants labeled "low light tolerant" can survive in these conditions long-term without losing their health or appearance. True low light champions like ZZ Plants, Snake Plants, and Pothos don't just survive, they actually grow well. If your space has zero natural light, a basic grow light a few hours a day makes a significant difference, but the plants in this collection are chosen to work with what most homes and apartments naturally have.
The top performers in low light conditions are plants that have adapted to thrive under forest canopies in nature, which translates perfectly to dim indoor spaces.
ZZ Plants are the closest thing to indestructible in low light, they store water in their roots and can go weeks without attention. Snake Plants tolerate both low light and infrequent watering, making them ideal for offices. Golden Pothos and Heartleaf Philodendron trail beautifully even in shaded spots and grow fast with minimal care. Chinese Evergreens are especially good for adding color to dark rooms — varieties like Lady Valentine and Silver Bay stay vibrant even with limited light. Not sure which fits your space? Our Plant Finder Quiz filters by light level and gives you a

Low light plants are generally low maintenance, that combination is exactly what makes them so popular. The key rule: water less than you would with bright-light plants. Lower light means slower growth, which means slower water absorption and a much higher risk of overwatering if you stick to a fixed schedule.
The better approach: check the soil before you water. When the top inch or two feels dry, water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom. In low light conditions, most of these plants need water every 10–14 days in spring and summer, and even less in fall and winter. Fertilize once a month in the growing season and skip it entirely in winter. Rotate your plant occasionally so all sides get equal exposure to whatever
light is available.
Almost, but not indefinitely without any light source. ZZ Plants and Snake Plants are the most tolerant of extremely dim conditions and can last longer than most in near-darkness. For truly windowless spaces like interior offices or bathrooms without skylights, a basic grow light placed nearby for 4–6 hours a day makes a real difference without much effort or cost.
The practical test: if you can comfortably read a book in the space without turning on a light, most low light plants will do fine. If you need artificial light just to see clearly, supplement with a grow light. Check our plant care blog for a guide on choosing the right grow light setup for your space.
Some are, some aren't and it's worth knowing before you buy. Pothos, ZZ Plants, and Peace Lily are among the most popular low light houseplants, but all three are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Snake Plants are also toxic to pets.
If you need a plant that's both low light tolerant and pet safe, your best options are Spider Plants, certain Calathea varieties, and Chinese Evergreens. Browse our Pet-Friendly Plants collection for options that are verified non-toxic, or use the Plant Finder Quiz to filter by both low light tolerance and pet safety at the same time.
